Problems after KB4540673

Post by reddawg »

Is anyone having problems after Windows 10 version 1903 or 1909 installed the "2020-03 Cumulative for Windows 10 1903 x64-based Systems (KB4540673)" update? When I try to open a Command Prompt, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor and I can't do anything.

This is why I rarely update my Win 10 box that BI runs on...the updates seem to be getting flakier over time. I found this page which mentions issues on boot, but I don't think there was anything about a black command prompt screen.

https://windows101tricks.com/windows-10 ... o-install/

Windows update stuck downloading or failed to install with different errors 0x800f0922, 0x8000ffff, 0x800f0826? Here how to fix windows update problems windows 10.

Microsoft recently released a new security update KB4540673 for the latest Windows 10 version 1909. Installing KB4540673 bumps OS to Windows 10 Build 18363.719 aka November 2019 Update that focuses on both security and non-security fixes. And most importantly addresses problem that prevents upgrading to a new version and patches various security holes. Well, Windows 10 KB4540673 download and install automatically and user need restart the PC to apply the changes. But several windows users report 2020-03 Cumulative update for windows 10 version 1903 for x64 based system (KB4540673) failed to install with different errors 0x800f0922, 0x8000ffff, 0x800f0826 and more it seems that error 0x800f0900 and 0x80070005 is the most frequent one.
“There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:
2020-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems (KB4540673) – Error 0x800f0900 or 0x80070005″
And the same situation with devices running Windows 10 October 2019 Update version 1809. KB4538461 update for Windows 10 Build 17763.1098 stuck installing or Failed to install.

The symptoms are pretty much the same in all cases. KB4540673/KB4538461 update either fails to install and pushes users back to the desktop before undoing changes, boots to a black screen or appears to be installed successfully only to be then re-offered to the same systems, asking for a machine restart to complete the process.

Thixotropic, I appreciate your reply. In my case, the 2020-03 Cumulative update for windows 10 version 1903 for x64 based system (KB4540673) did not fail to install. It appeared to install properly and I am able to boot and log into Windows 10 without issue.

My only problem is if I try to open a Command Prompt, the Command prompt window opens with a black screen with a blinking cursor. It does not present me with a C:\ prompt and I can't type commands. I am going to try rolling back to an earlier restore point and if that doesn't work, I will restore my PC to my last Acronis TrueImage backup which was last night before the update installed.

I've been considering Acronis TrueImage, do you use it through the subscription service or the one-time purchase?

I'm not a fan of subscription services but I could see spending $50 for it one time.

No issues for me. That cursor position looks oddly in an accurate position. Do you get any response when you type? If so, have you checked the font/background colors to make sure it's not black on blacK? ;)

Do you receive the same if started with 'Run as Administrator'?
Also, what does the PowerShell windows look like?

Side Note:
I used to use Acronis TruImage, but has issues with it not recognizing my external drives.
Switched to AOMEI Backupper, and haven't had any issues. Plus, it's free! I liked it enough that I purchased the license.

I'm on Winver 1909 (Build 18363.72) on this pc, and I have no sight of that update. Command prompt working OK too.

Acronis True Image used here too, with multiple licences. It works over my network so that I can back all of my pc's up to a large USB drive from the comfort of my armchair. It's a getting old thing  None of that fluffy cloud rubbish here, but I do keep multiple copies of all back ups, including an off site copy.

Hmmm, I like the look of AOMEI; I think I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes. If it does what it says then I'd probably buy a license. "Decisions, decisions", lol. (Only oldies like me will get that reference, eh?)

I buy the Acronis True Image 2020 1-PC or 3-PC one time purchase. I usually can find Acronis True Image 2020 1-PC for about $30 on eBay or Amazon for a retail box.

Amazon - Acronis True Image 2020 - 1 Computer for $38.97

If I type characters nothing appears. However, if I press ENTER the cursor move down one line. Really weird! I ran SFC /SCANNOW and DISM commands and they both reported no problems.

Yes, same issue with Command prompt with Run as Administrator. Powershell window opens and looks normal.

If you do an Edit -> Mark and then highlight that area as if to copy it, does anything show up?
