Got a lot of data to move to AWS? Call Amazon and ask for a Snowball. They'll send you what looks like a metal suitcase loaded with drives and a controller.

A Snowball is a ruggedized data transport device that you load with your data. Then you FedEx it to AWS and they'll import in into S3 buckets or whatever you want (i.e. Glacier LTS, push it into an Aurora database, etc).

A 50 TB Snowball device costs $200 for the first 10 days, and $15 days thereafter. So, the Snowball import cost for 10 TB would be a one time $200 (assuming 10 days or fewer). Data transfer-in would be $0.00 (free).

A 50TB dataset might take a week or more to upload even on a fast connection, but sending data physically cuts the transfer and load time down to a day or so.

I used these at a health care company when we were getting rid of our on-prem gear and moving all our stuff to the Cloud. We had petabytes of client data, HIPAA-classified data, billing and medication data from the Pharmacy Benefit Manager programs, etc etc etc.

To upload all this would have taken months and months. We ordered a few Snowballs, spent a few days transferring all the bits and bytes, and then sent them off to Amazon. A few days later we had everything stored in AWS S3 buckets as well as a ton of old data that went into Glacier for long term storage.

One thing they don't advertise is that you can set the Snowball to "wipe and freeze", or as we called it, "halt and catch fire".

Depending on the settings you program, if someone tampers with the Snowball or tries to pull data from it without passing the layered authentication it'll smoke itself and turn into a brick. Your data will be zorched and unrecoverable (from the Snowball, that is). The bad guys will end up with 50TB of zeros and a nifty suitcase, but that's all they'll get. :)

Yeah, how did that happen? What a mystery; it may never be solved.
