With new substreams, BI doesn't honor 'Store alert images as hi-res files'

Post by rayzor »

Since switching to using substreams to reduce cpu usage, I would expect that 'Store alert images as hi-res files' would take the snapshot from the main stream for higher quality, but as you can see, the file size is reduced by 1/10th and the quality is so horrible I can't see a face.

Each camera only knows about itself. And each stream is considered a different camera, so there's no way for the sub stream to know about the main stream by default. For what you want to do you would need to have the sub stream trigger the main stream, which is doable. Hi-res jpg just refers to not compressing the crap out of the image from the stream that triggered. Set up the main stream to only record when triggered and trigger it from motion on the sub stream and you should have exactly what you want. There are a number of AI motion threads for BI5 that do this sort of thing with an AI engine inserted in the middle to reduce false alarms.

Completely separate issue, are you sure your main stream would be able to make out a face at the distance you're expecting? It's a common misconception with these cameras that you would be able to. But unless the camera is right in front of them or a doorway the person goes through, you probably won't be able to. The motion compression used on these to keep the encoding fast and bandwidth reasonable means LOTS of artifacting on anything moving. It might be worth testing purely from the main stream to see if the camera is capable of doing what you want before configuring BI5 for it.

im having a similar issue, i use the "take jpeg snapshot each mm:ss" feature on all my cameras and since enabling sub streams the jpegs are clearly being taken from the substream not the main stream.
i hope they fix this soon.
