Did I do it or is it 5.2.9.15 ?

Post by Matts1984 »

So I updated this morning to 5.2.9.15 but I've also been fiddling with camera settings. I am noticing today that my inactive camera previews in the console are not consistently updating like they used to. I do have it set to "Limit decoding unless required" which with the keyframes set to 1 second intervals, resulted in the images updating once a second. Now the images are updating inconsistently but with delays as long as a couple minutes. If I turn off "Limit decoding" it appears to fix the lag issue - at the expense of much much higher CPU which is not the goal. I just want to return the CPU to how it was and not sure if I did some combination on the cameras that messed it up or if it's some issue with 5.2.9.15 (I didn't notice this with 5.2.9.14).

FWIW, the settings I've been adjusting is the FPS - to increase them - but with corresponding key intervals so from the CPU and console perspective, it should be a wash (some minor CPU expected with the higher D2D record rate). I also experimented with going for H.265+ to H.265 or H.264 as those are intended to be bandwidth savers and I don't have that concern. I've reverted that and don't see a difference.

While not on the same topic, I also want to figure out this recent Substream monitoring capability but it is apparently above me and I need the user guide for dummies. I know many of you have done this, can you help me out?

Well reverting back to 15 fps (from the tested 20 fps) appears to have resolved the console refresh issue soooooooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am still wanting to do the substream for motion detection. Can anyone help walk me through that?

Do you have 'Limit live preview rate' enabled? If this is enabled, Console refresh rate is separate from the cameras fps and set to whatever you specify. This does not effect recordings or motion - only what is displayed to the console. For example, you could have a Console refresh of 5 fps. I've found that 10 fps is adequate.

Test this out by changing it to 5fps, then watch the BI cpu drop. Then to 10 or 15, and notice the difference. You may be able to save an additional 10-15% cpu.

Interesting, I had never messed with that setting. I didn't have it enabled and I did play with a bit. It seems somewhat similar to the 'Limit decoding unless required' option which I actually think I prefer, but thank you for showing me another corner of the product!

Ultimately I'm not concerned about CPU cycles right now. I'm typically around 10% unless the aforementioned "decoding is required" in which case I jump into the 20s or 30s.... still within tolerance to me. I feel I have overhead to still add a couple cameras if the situation presents. I'm not aware of any false negative alerts and false positives are infrequent (other than a spider web I've been meaning to deal with and sun -> shade because of clouds).

I still want to try and configure the substreams for all my cameras but I don't know how to determine the paths to them and the 'Find/inspect' doesn't populate it. The substream quality settings are set on all the cameras though.

I upgraded to 5.2.9.15 today. I noticed all cameras were updating at 5 second intervals.
I found that under Settings/info, CAMERAS the "Video during Remote Desktop" tab was set for 5 seconds. I changed it to UNLIMITED and now all is well. This is not the first time that some of my settings have gotten changed during an update.
I run 20 cameras on a first gen I-7 and using the new sub stream features has reduced my CPU usage greatly. There have been tons of bugs due to this conversion and Ken's implementing H.265
Here is the basic guide to setting up sub streams.

Here is a pic of what it looks like under the camera settings, general tab and an other example of how the settings look for some of my Chinese cams that I use. Make sure each of your cameras are setup with sub streaming.

Thank you so much! This was just enough to help me connect the dots. All working now.
