Eagles on cam

Post by Thixotropic » Sun Jan 31, 2021 8:31 pm

I noticed a bald eagle cruising around the neighborhood this morning (you don't see them much around here).

I cranked a PTZ cam around to see what it would show. The image quality is terrible but it's recognizable (sort of). In the US it's illegal to even pick up a feather they've shed.

According to federal law, it's illegal to take a feather shed from an eagle. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act of 1940 prohibits the possession of eagle feathers by non-Native Americans. Anyone convicted of violating the law could face a fine of up to $100,000 and a year in jail. In short, it is illegal to keep eagle feathers or parts without a permit.

It's also illegal to yell at them, throw anything at them (including food), or "harass" them in any way. So yeah you could actually do time in a Federal penitentiary for throwing a peanut to a bird.

I don't have any footage of one but I had one that picked off a chicken (possibly two)... frustrating! Not that I'd actually be able to do anything but a fox or raccoon I can deal with... a bald eagle just shows up for dinner whenever it wants.

(Chickens haven't been allowed to free roam since then... they have a pretty decent size enclosure I'm planning to expand)

I was expecting this thread to be about a group of senior aged gentlemen singing about a hotel in California

A local bald eagle has taken 3 of my ducks. They are hard to catch on the cameras;Image
