Pi-Hole

Post by TimG » Sun Jun 27, 2021 8:21 am

Well I just had to try it. Spare Pi3 - check. Nothing to do other than make life more complicated - check. Pi-Hole - check.

So what is Pi-Hole ? It's an ad-blocker that you can run on your LAN to prevent adverts appearing on every device on your LAN. I installed Pi-Hole on the Pi3 and gave it a fixed IP address. Then it's off to the router to change the DNS address to the Pi-Hole fixed IP address. Disabled AdBlock Plus and a few ads showed up on general web pages. OK, check each pc on my network to see if it has a static IP and what the DNS settings are. Now each pc DNS is set to auto, or to the router.

Result ? No adverts and a stupid smug grin on my face. Must be time to donate to one of those things that just makes life a little bit better 8-)

There are more and more of my frequent sites that use Admiral (or something like that) that detects when users are using ad-blockers then fail to show the page.

Annoying, I have actually stopped frequenting some sites because their ads are so obnoxiously intrusive.

How does pi-hole work with those sites?

Good question! I previously used Adblock plus which triggered them every time. So far I haven't seen any complaints from websites about me using an adblocker but I'm only 24 hours in. Do you have an example site I can check it with?

I looked up the question on Reddit, and they suggested dailymail.co.uk but I see no ads there and no complaints about adblocker.

Just found a site explaining how to use pi-hole to get rid of adverts on Youtube. I'm still getting those so I'm off for some research :geek:
